The highlight of Junior Development Program was winning the VGA Junior Pennant competition. This was the first year that the VGA had arranged a tournament between all metro golf clubs.  The format of the program was seven divisions consisting of six clubs in each division.  The winner of each division played in a knock out competition with Green Acres winning the overall competition.

Green Acres Golf Development Sub Committee

The Green Acres Board has established this sub committee with the objective of enhancing the standard of golf for all members of Green Acres particularly junior members and those who represent the Club in inter-club (pennant) competitions.

This sub committee also oversees the Junior Development Fund which provides funding sourced from members  contributions to encourage the development of junior golfers at Green Acres.

Junior Programs

Green Acres Golf Club is proud of it various junior golfing programs and has focused on this area of the game for over twenty years.  The various levels of junior golf are detailed below and should you require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact either the Director of Golf or the Club office.

Junior Beginners Program

A six week program aimed at six to eight year old children held three times per year.  The program is run by the Director of Golf and is aimed at teaching the basics of golf with all participants provided with a shortened club.  These programs usually begin in October each year and are run on Saturday afternoons for approximately one hour in duration. 

Junior Clinics

The Club also offers a clinic for 10 to 14 year old children.  There is no requirement to be a member of Green Acres. This program is designed to introduce young golfers to the basics of golf.  These sessions are run from November through to March each year with a break over the Christmas period.  Applications open for this program in late September with spaces usually filling very quickly.  The program covers lessons with long, mid and short shots, bunker play and putting.  Explanations are also provided on the more common rules.  All participants play on the course.

Junior Golf Development Sessions

This is a program for assimilating junior members into competition play.  The program involves coaching from the Director of Golf, mentoring from senior players , participation in tournaments  and culminates in potentially participating in the Junior Pennant program.

The program is run in a small group ( maximum of three ).  These sessions run during the year and are available for all junior members.  The purpose is to provide more individual coaching concentrating on improving shot making, club selection skills and course management.  The cost for these sessions is funded by the Golf Development Sub committee.

Junior Pennant Program

The Pennant Program is designed to support participants in the elite competition conducted  by the VGA and WGV.

Junior Club Tournaments

In addition to the above programs, Green Acres organises a number of tournaments for their juniors to play in.  These are typically scheduled in the holidays.

Green Acres also supports their junior members by paying for tournament fees for events that are run at other clubs.

Schools Program

This is an initiative aimed at new golfers at nearby schools to provide them with an insight into the benefits of playing golf in a members golf club.  Schools are invited to utilise the Club facilities one afternoon a week and are provided with coaching from the Director of Golf as well as guidance on how to conduct themselves in a members golf club environment.  They are taught basic rules , course etiquette and the methodology of the different types of competitions.

Ray Doherty Scholarship

Ray Doherty was a strong supporter of junior golf in the Club emphasising not only their playing ability but their approach and attitude towards the game.  A scholarship has been established in his name that provides funding to one or two exceptional juniors per year with the aim of developing both their golfing and life skills.  It is also expected that these young members will then go on to provide valuable support to other juniors who are coming through the junior ranks of the Club.
